Play therapy

Every child deserves a safe space to explore their feelings and develop emotional resilience.

Play therapy is versatile and can help children dealing with various challenges, such as:

  • bereavement/loss of a loved person,
  • separated parents,
  • communication and behavioural problems,
  • abuse,
  • nightmares,
  • trauma,
  • delayed development, etc

A child may find it difficult to talk about their problems, or their feelings. Play therapy offers opportunities for children to explore their feelings through play and different resources and media offered in the sessions.

The child leads the play during the session, and the therapist follows their lead. The therapist facilitates play to help the child through their process of healing.

The benefits of Play Therapy

  • Improving self-esteem
  • Boosting confidence
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Develop communication
  • Improve resilience

What to expect:

  • Play Therapy takes place weekly, over an agreed period, in the same place and at the same time.
  • Sessions last 40 minutes
  • The ‘toolkit’, provides a range of toys and creative media, for example craft material, sand play, miniatures, doll’s house, etc.
  • A short-term therapy period is twelve weeks. That is the minimum number of sessions.  If the client’s difficulties are more complex or their needs are higher, then longer-term play therapy may be recommended.
  • After 8 sessions, a review meeting is held with the referrer and parent/carer. This meeting helps to decide as to whether to extend the therapy or end after 12 sessions as agreed.

At Happy4Life Play Therapy, I provide a calm, creative environment where children can:

  • Express feelings they may struggle to put into words
  • Build self‑confidence and emotional awareness
  • Develop coping skills to handle life’s challenges
